Studying Spanish in Santiago de Cuba is an amazing experience. Santiago is a city full of history, and it has a true tropical Caribbean climate and spirit. The Spanish classes and homestays take place in Reparto Sueño, an area within walking distance of Cespedes Park, the heart of Santiago de Cuba. Here you can also find the city’s largest hotel, the Heredia Theatre sports house and Ernesto Che Guevara Monument.

The Spanish courses in Santiago start any Monday throughout the year. You can choose between a Spanish Language course, Spanish Language & Dance or Spanish Language and Music. The dance course can be salsa, mambo or rumba (from beginner to advanced). Lessons are given by qualified teachers of the Escuela Nacional de Arte (E.N.A).
The music course consists of percussion and guitar. Both the dance and music classes take place at the teacher’s home and can be individual or in groups, one hour per day. The Spanish classes are interactive, adapted to your level of Spanish. All teachers are native speakers with university degrees and extensive experience.

Staying with a Cuban host family is a great way to practice your Spanish and experience the local culture. The families vary from elderly couples to widows to families, and they all have the in Cuba required official license. All homes are within walking distance of each other and the location of the classes. You can choose to live in a single or a double room, mostly with private bathrooms. There is air-conditioning, or a fan and breakfast and dinner are included.

The school organises weekly activities in Santiago that teach you about the interesting Cuban culture and will show you interesting places in town. You will get a firsthand experience of the culture and enjoy all that Cuba has to offer. There are a variety of activities, such as dance classes (salsa, mambo or rumba), music classes (for example guitar class), swimming, a guided city tour in Santiago de Cuba, a visit to a tobacco factory or a museum, or a meeting with Santeria priests.

Santiago de Cuba, located at the eastern side of the island, has a unique identity, shaped by a rich mix of cultures and Afro-Caribbean heritage. Also called Cuban’s cultural capital, the city has a passion for music and it the birthplace of the son and the bolero. With the Sierra Madre at the background, Cuba’s second city after Havana is probably also one of Cuba’s most picturesque cities.

Santiago has a rich history, and it was a very important city for almost five centuries. The city is often seen as the root of the Cuban Revolution. Situated in a partly submerged valley, it is bordered by the beautiful Sierra Maestra Mountains and the Caribbean Sea, which offers visitors amazing views and activities that combine adventure, trekking and diving with ecotourism.

At the moment, there is no volunteer program in Santiago, but students in the Cuban capital of Havana can visit social and cultural community projects.

The school offers many days and weekend trips to explore the real Cuban culture, for example, to one of the tobacco factories in town. The most popular trips include a visit to the Basilica el Combre, in the old mining town of Cobre, about 18 kilometres northwest from Santiago de Cuba, or to Gran Piedra, a large volcanic rock perched atop a mountain with spectacular views. There are possibilities to go horse riding and diving and to play tennis and football. Another interesting trip is to a mango farm in Santa Maria. Within the city itself, there are many interesting sites to visit, such as museums, parks, squares and cemetery and the Parque Baconao, a large park area where you can relax next to the lagoon.
